It is essential to bring back the glory to the granite industry of Karnataka by way of initiatives in the current mineral policy. Total granite production for the year 2006 2007 is 1.96 lakhs cu.m. The granite varieties, resources and number of leases are given in Annexure-II.

 — The mineral belt covers an area of 1.92 lakh sq.km including 29 districts of the state. Karnataka is also endowed with the green stone belt with valuable mineral resources such as gold, silver, copper, iron-ore, manganese, limestone, dolomite, asbestos, bauxite, chromite, kaolin and granite rock.

 — Granite mining in India stands as a testament to human ingenuity, economic prowess, and environmental stewardship. Its impact resonates far beyond mere mining operations, shaping landscapes, economies, and global trade.

The recovery of marketable grade granite is reported to be 32 to 40 per cent in Karnataka, 25 to 75 per cent in four quarries around Jalore, the main granite mining centre of Rajasthan, and 20 to 40 per cent in Tamil Nadu. Granite exports from India last fiscal were worth Rs 3,018 crore.

The main sources of granite quarrying and production are typically Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat. It is worth noting that a significant portion of the granite mined in Gujarat is either sent to Rajasthan or exported for cutting and processing.

(i) Very fine grained Grey granite (Sira grey Variety) Chintanmani, Siddlaghatta of Chikkaballapura District Hoskote of Bangalore District. (GG1) 15% of Sale Value or of Average Selling Price on advalorem basis or Rs.1,350 per m3 which is higher.

Karnataka is an extensive treasure house of Granite and supplies numerous varieties of the stone from Sparkling Black, Imperial Red, Queen Rose to Indian Juprana and multi-coloured Granites.

Major production of granite in raw as well as processed form is generally from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. Statewise production of granite during 2017-18 to 2019-20 is furnished in Table-2.
