Covering some 3000 square miles, the Jos Plateau lies at a general level of rather over 4000 feet and forms the watershed between the Niger, Benue, and Lake Chad drainage systems (Figs. 1 and 2). Inselberg topography is common.

Columbite occurs in Plateau state, Jos Nigeria, mainly in the placers deposits of cassiterite usually found only a few of 10km from the granitic parent rocks. It occurs as an accessory mineral in the northern parts of the country in smaller quantities, but the richest deposits occur on the Plateau.
