feed size for sag mill

In the mineral processing sector, a common approach to expanding a SAG mill circuit is the addition of secondary or tertiary crushing to reduce the size of the mill feed. The addition of pre-crushing can increase the throughput of an existing SAG mill circuit by 10% to 30% or more, depending on the nature of the ore and the crushing

 — Substantial fluctuations were experienced in the circulating loads within the test circuit depending on the size of the feed reporting to the mill. S. To take advantage of periods when larger ore was available to the test circuit, the control of the feed to the mill was further changed by automating the mill feed rate based on feed size.

Feed Size, F80: Primary crushed ore is mandatory to feed any SAG mill. Typical feed size range is 80% passing 130 to 160 mm. Softer ores will be a little finer but the finer size is not sustainable when the ore becomes hard. Pre-crushing to finer sizes enhances throughput as does crushing of pebbles from the SAG mill (usually minus 60 mm).

Some operations, however, have recognized an opportunity in the relationship between feed size and mill performance and manipulate feed size to obtain efficiency improvements. Examples include changes to blasting practices, ROM stockpiling, partial or fully secondary crushing and selective prescreening of sag mill feed.

 — The feed enters one end of the ball mill, and discharges out the other end. Ball mills vary greatly in size, from large industrial ball mills measuring more than 25 ft. in diameter to small mills used for sample preparation in laboratories. Rod mills are similar to ball mills and use metal rods as the grinding media. Pebble mills use rock ...

 — A SAG (Semi-Autogenous Grinding) mill is a giant rotating cylinder filled with grinding media and the ore being reduced. As the mill rotates, the grinding media lifts and the impact crushes the feed material. SAG mill control refers to the practice of managing the mill load, which is the amount of material inside the mill at any given time.

stage SAG milling is likely to be a comparatively profitable grinding circuit design. xMedium Grind – 80% passing size between 106 and 75 µm. To mill in single stage SAG configuration, the feed must be consistent and the downstream process reasonably capable of handling some fluctuations in the grind size.

The design of large mills has become increasingly more complicated as the size has increased and there is little doubt that without sophisticated design procedures such as the use of the Finite Element method the required factors of safety would make large mills prohibitively expensive. In …

 — With feed size measurement technology, particularly pattern recognition methods, reaching a high level of maturity, opportunities now exist to manipulate AG/SAG mill feed size distribution through stockpile feeder operation and blast pattern selection (Morrell and Valery, 2001) and through blasting practice optimisation (Sherman, 2001).
