In Coal India Limited (CIL) has plan to set up 12 new coking coal washeries and one non-coking coal new washery to reduce the quantity of ash and useless component from coal. All these washeries are expected to be operational by FY:2026.

More than 90 percent of coal mined in India is produced from opencast mines contributing to inert contamination. Run of mine (ROM) coal extracted from opencast mines in India typically has ash contents in the range of 35 percent to as high as 50%, low and reducing calorific value (2500-4500 kcal/kg).

 — Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), under the Ministry of Coal has announced the initiation of commercial operations at the state-of-the-art 5.0 MTPA Madhuband Washery. The washery started commercial operations on 29th November 2023 in the presence and guidance of Shri Samiran Dutta, CMD, BCCL.

CIL proposes to set up 7 more non-coking coal washeries with a combined capacity of 59 MTPA. Out of these, construction in case of one washery has started. Ministry of Coal has set up an inter Ministerial committee to monitor the progress of construction of washeries.
